“Ordinary folks are merely a breath and important people a sham; if you lay them on a balance-scale, they go up – both together are lighter than nothing.” (Psalms 62:10 (9))
Let’s read that again.
“Ordinary folks are merely a breath and important people a sham; if you lay them on a balance-scale, they go up – both together are lighter than nothing.” (Psalms 62:10 (9))
No ambiguity there. Our lives on this earth amount to nothing in light of eternity. This is why God, starting with the prophets of old, has continually called mankind to focus on eternity rather than on earthly desires and problems.
“I, I am He who comforts you! What ails you that you fear man who must die, mortals who fare like grass?” (Isaiah 51:12, Tanakh)
“You don’t even know if you will be alive tomorrow! For all you are is a mist that appears for a little while and then disappears.” (James 4:14)
God makes it clear that this world is not important. God is supreme over all, as David reminds us.
“By the word of Adonai the heavens were made, and their whole host by a breath from his mouth. He collects the sea waters together in a heap; he put the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear Adonai! Let all living in the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and there it was; he commanded, and there it stood.
“Adonai brings to nothing the plans of nations, he foils the plans of the peoples. But the counsel of Adonai stands forever, his heart’s plans are for all generations. How blessed is the nation whose God is Adonai, the people he chose as his heritage! Adonai looks out from heaven; he sees every human being; from the place where he lives he watches everyone living on earth, he who fashioned the hearts of them all and understands all they do.” (Psalms 33:6-15)
God continues to call us to focus on eternal life rather than this insignificant life. As Paul writes to Timothy:
“As for those who do have riches in this present world, charge them not to be proud and not to let their hopes rest on the uncertainties of riches but rest their hopes on God, who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment. Charge them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, to be generous and ready to share. In this way they will treasure up for themselves a good foundation for the future, so that they may lay hold of the real life.” (I Timothy 6:17-19)
There was ever only one Very Important Person (V.I.P.) that walked this earth: Yeshua the Messiah (Jesus Christ).
“Let your attitude toward one another be governed by your being in union with the Messiah Yeshua:
“Though he was in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God something to be possessed by force. On the contrary, he emptied himself, in that he took the form of a slave by becoming like human beings are.
“And when he appeared as a human being, he humbled himself still more by becoming obedient even to death – death on a stake as a criminal!” (Philippians 2:5-8)
When Yeshua (Christ) returns, EVERYONE will know.
“Therefore God raised him to the highest place and gave him the name above every name; that in honor of the name given Yeshua, every knee will bow – in heaven, on earth and under the earth – and every tongue will acknowledge that Yeshua the Messiah is Adonai (Jesus Christ is Lord) – to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)
